The Super Eagles have said goodbye to one of their most influential leaders. Captain William Troost-Ekong has officially retired from international football, ending a decade-long journey that saw him become a true stalwart of Nigerian football.
The 32-year-old defender, who boasts 83 caps, eight goals, and appearances in two Africa Cup of Nations finals, confirmed his retirement just days before Nigeria kick off their 2025 AFCON campaign in Morocco.
The announcement sparked an outpouring of emotion from his teammates. Victor Osimhen, the Galatasaray striker, took to 𝕏 to express his gratitude.
"It’s been an honour sharing the pitch with you, Skippo," Osimhen wrote. "Your guidance, humility, and professionalism inspired us all. Thank you for everything you’ve given to the team and Nigeria. You’ve earned it. Legend forever."
Alex Iwobi described the moment as emotional for the team, praising Troost-Ekong’s leadership and mentorship both on and off the pitch.
"Even towards the end of his career, when he wasn’t playing as much, he remained a key part of the team," Iwobi told SportyTV. "His voice, leadership, and ability to keep the team united were unmatched."
Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong switched allegiance to Nigeria after representing the Netherlands at youth level. He made his senior debut on 13 June 2015 against Chad in an AFCON qualifier.
Troost-Ekong also holds the record for the most AFCON goals scored by a defender, with five strikes. His last outing for Nigeria was a late substitute appearance against Gabon on 13 November, 2025.
Currently, the defender continues his club career with Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League, leaving behind a legacy that young Nigerian defenders will aspire to emulate.
