The Sokoto State Government has slammed reports claiming that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti during his visit to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.
In a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, the government described the reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that Governor Aliyu was not in the country at the time.
The clarification revealed that Governor Aliyu was in Saudi Arabia performing the Lesser Hajj on November 30, 2025, the same time Dr. Otti visited Sokoto.
Upon arrival at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Dr. Otti was received by a delegation of selected commissioners and special advisers, who escorted him to Government House for the customary reception accorded to visiting governors.
The government stressed Sokoto State’s longstanding culture of hospitality, noting that all visitors are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or region.
The statement also reaffirmed that Governor Aliyu remains a dedicated leader, committed to peace, respect for authority, and Nigeria’s unity and stability.
Governor Otti’s visit to Nnamdi Kanu—recently convicted on terrorism charges and moved to the Sokoto Correctional Centre—was reportedly intended to assure the IPOB leader of ongoing administrative efforts to secure his release.
Reports from Dr. Otti’s team confirmed he was accompanied by the Abia State Attorney General, Commissioner for Justice, and senior Sokoto State officials, with no mention of Governor Aliyu.
Interestingly, IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful later praised both Governor Otti and Governor Aliyu, which may have contributed to the misleading reports now denied by the Sokoto Government.
