Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has stirred major reactions after declaring that the Federal Government is “overwhelmed” by the escalating insecurity across Nigeria.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his X account, the former Minister of Defence expressed deep worry over rising kidnappings, banditry, hate speech, ethnic profiling, and the growing circulation of illegal arms nationwide.
Kwankwaso: FG Can No Longer Handle Nigeria’s Security Breakdown
Kwankwaso said the situation has deteriorated so badly that state governments are now relying heavily on vigilante groups, many of whom lack adequate training. According to him, this has worsened the spread of small arms and light weapons, allowing criminal groups and even political actors to form “private militias.”
He described this trend as dangerous and alarming, warning that it now threatens Nigeria’s already fragile unity.
Ethnic Profiling, Harassment & Hate Speech Rising — Kwankwaso Warns
Kwankwaso also condemned the increasing reports of Nigerians being harassed or detained in regions outside their ethnic origin. He linked this to the rise in hate speech and intimidation on social media, amplified by ethnic and religious bias.
“These developments,” he said, “pose a grave threat to national unity and cohesion.”
Calls For Urgent Federal Government Intervention
Kwankwaso urged President Tinubu’s administration to act immediately before the situation escalates beyond control.
He specifically raised alarm over the ease with which illegal arms are now circulating nationwide, describing it as “deeply alarming and unacceptable.”
Expresses Confidence in Defence Minister Christopher Musa
Despite his concerns, the former presidential candidate congratulated the new Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.), expressing confidence that he can help restore stability — if given strong political backing.
