The Federal Government has confirmed the safe return of 100 students abducted from a Catholic school in Niger State, praising the efforts of security agencies in securing their release. President Bola Tinubu has also called for the immediate rescue of all remaining kidnapped Nigerians across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, President Tinubu commended the dedication of security personnel, describing their work as “steadfast” in ensuring that the children were safely returned to their families following the tragic November 21 attack. He also congratulated Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State for his leadership and support during the rescue operations.
President Tinubu emphasized that every effort must be made to account for all victims and bring them home safely. He reiterated that the Federal Government will continue collaborating with state authorities to strengthen school security and create a safe, conducive learning environment for children nationwide.
The President warned that proactive measures are now mandatory. Security agencies, working closely with state governments, must act decisively to prevent future kidnappings. “Our children should no longer be sitting ducks for heartless terrorists intent on disrupting their education and subjecting them and their parents to unspeakable trauma,” he stated.
The abduction at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State, saw over 300 students and staff taken by gunmen on November 21. While some 50 students managed to escape immediately, the fate of the others remained uncertain for weeks, highlighting the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria’s schools.
